more about membership

As a fully mutual housing co-operative, those who live here share decisions collectively. There is no outside control over us and no personal ownership either. We are like guardians of the Peace House. If you think you might be interested in living at the Peace House please email us with why and what you think you can contribute. We will then arrange a visit. If all goes well you will be invited to stay for a short while and then after consideration on both sides you could come as a probationary member for 3 months. If that goes well you would then be a full member.

We are looking for people who are inspiring, hard working , creative and thoughtful. You need to be committed to a simple green life style and to peace in the world and working actively towards it. We each pay £65 per week which includes food. We prefer people to work part time in paid employment so they have enough money to pay the rent and enough time to get involved in other stuff.  It's a great place to live with lots going on.  The physical surroundings are also beautiful now, after years of hard work by lots of people. There are still plenty more things to do of course!  Feeling uplifted by a sunny evening I wrote the poem below about life here. It is not about all the amazing things that go on here. It is just about the beauty of the place (sorry about the format, the lines won't stop where I want them too without creating a double space - we need computer people living here too!) Meanwhile if you are interested in becoming a member ...... send us an email!

on a summer evening I feel so happy to be here in the Peace House, topping and tailing our own gooseberries as Nick cooks supper, the garden is splended and full of vigour, the broad beans will soon be ready and there are sugar peas tonight

whenever I walk under the canopy of the tree of heaven, I breathe easier, it is a magic space, with its own sounds and colour, a special glade

I go into 321 and sunlight streams in the front window, picking up the colours of the mobile we all made with Andrea

the carpet is from Amalia, the door is mended because of Alan

wherever I go I think if the rich history, of the accomplishments

it wasn't always like this, we have worked hard, we have won and lost

missing now are the sounds of children's voices

but we have the community space with its beautiful wooden floor, and the bike workshop bursting with potential and bikes, and the useful outside toilet and shower

so much, so much

I am very lucky to live here

to feel the benefit of so many hands and so many hearts

I miss friends who have lived here - especially today I miss Frank and Bek

I look foward to those I will know, those who we can share more summers with, more winters round the wood burner, more stories and songs

come and join us
